VoIP on Web2.0

전세계 VoIP 서비스 사업자 중에 가장 마케팅 능력이 뛰어난 곳은 어디일까? 필자는 주저없이 Jajah를 꼽을 것이다. 현재 Jajah는 Skype의 가장 강력한 경쟁자로 자리매김하는데 성공한 듯 보이는데, 지난 번에 VoIP 업계 1위인 Skype를 향한 전면전을 선포하면서 No Headset Campaign을 진행한 바 있다. 이 마케팅이 성공했는지는 현재 알 수 없지만, "Skype는 헤드셋이 필요한 불편한 서비스/Jajah는 헤드셋 필요없이 이용자가 익숙한 전화기에서 이용할 수 있는 편리한 서비스"라는 극명한 대비를 통해 Skype의 대항마임을 만천하에 알린 바 있다.

사실 Jajah의 서비스는 Bridge Call/Call Back/Web-activated Call 등의 여러 개념으로 불리지만, Skype가 자체 개발한 P2P 프로토콜과는 비교도 되지 않을만큼 기술적으로 아무런 진입장벽이 없는 평범한 서비스이다. 그리고 발신자/착신자에게 모두 PSTN 전화를 걸어야 하는 모델로 인해 IP망에서 발신하는 타 VoIP 서비스에 비해 두 배의 정산료가 발생하는 약간 무모한 비즈니스 모델의 한계를 지니고 있는 것이 사실이다. 하지만 이런 약점을 기존 유저에게 편리한 전화 인터페이스를 제공하는 것과 마케팅 능력으로 극복하고 있다는 점이 놀라울 따름이다. 이제는 Skype가 이베이에 인수된 가격을 넘어서는 수준의 IPO를 준비하고 있다고 하니 현 시대 VoIP 마케팅의 귀감으로 인정받고 있는 듯 하다.

이런 Jajah가 학생들이 개학하는 시점에 맞춰 새로운 캠페인을 준비하고 있으니, 그것은 바로 "Back2School Campaign"이다.

이 캠페인의 정식명칭은 "Students Survival Kit"라고 하는데, 학생들이 생존(?)하기 위해서 반드시 이용해야 할 Web2.0 기반의 인터넷 서비스를 모아 놓았다. 보시면 아시겠지만 jajah가 직접 서비스하는 Jajah.com 외에 어떠한 형태의 매쉬업도 없고, 단지 학생들이 자주 이용하는 웹서비스를 모아놓은 형태이다. 자신의 서비스 하나만 은근슬쩍 넣어서 다른 서비스들을 소개하면서, 별도의 URL을 만들고 프로모션한다는 점이 놀라울 따름이다.

국내에서도 이런 류의 마케팅을 해 보는 것도 재미 있을 듯 한데.. 예를 들어 오픈아이디 하나로 이용할 수 있는 서비스를 묶어서 공동 프로모션을 진행해 보는 것이 괜찮을 듯. 물론 서비스간 연관성 및 매쉬업이 가능한 형태라면 정말 좋을 듯 하다.

마케팅의 귀재 Jajah! 과연 올해 안에 IPO에 성공해서 Skype를 뛰어넘을 수 있을지 정말 궁금하다.
